Even in the cooler months, our cows enjoy harvested pasture grasses that retain the smells, colors and most importantly the nutrients found in full functioning summer pastures. The Humane Treatment of AnimalsOur Certified Pasture Agreement is a third-party inspected and certified cornerstone of Grass Point Farms. We require rotational grazing in long, tall grass made up of select leguminous, grasses, clover, annuals and perinatal — ideal for healthy grazing, cows and dairy products. Our animals exercise daily as they graze in the sun, soaking in the Vitamin D, CLA's and Omega-3's. The average lifespan of our cows is two to three times that of "indoor" confined cows. Winter Grazing (Outwintering)The Grass Point Farmers are able to graze year round by getting extra cuttings of the grass in June when it grows the fastest. The pastures are wrapped and sealed to keep it fresh for winter. The farmers then move portable feeders throughout the rotational grazing area making pasture available to the cows. This again exercises the cows, keeps them in the sun and fertilizes the soil through the snow which is driven into the ground in the spring. As winter becomes colder, farmers make available loafing areas and wind breaks to keep the cows comfortable and content. |
